I spent a couple of summers living next door to Margaret and John when they lived on Stanford Avenue in Pocatello. What a wonderful family! How kind they were to the young, live-in babysitter next door--me! Margaret's incredible--legendary--Italian cooking drew me into the kitchen, and her incredibly warm, accepting personality enveloped me in love. She and her family were my salvation those two summers, a solid and steady beam of unconditional friendship.
Mrs. Sanna (I could never call her Margaret, not respectful enough from someone young enough to be her daughter) did me a huge favor before I graduated from Idaho State University and moved on with my life. I asked her to write a recommendation letter for me for a Fulbright scholarship application. She did. I never got to read it because it went directly to the scholarship committee. One member of the committee questioned my judgment in asking someone outside academia to write on my behalf. I thought that was odd because Mrs. Sanna was a person whom I admired greatly, and I valued her opinions. I got the scholarship, perhaps because this good woman spoke well of me.
Though I have visited her very seldom in recent years, I can never forget what a wise, welcoming, and loving servant of Christ she was. May her reward be great in Heaven.
