Obituary of Boyd Olen Young

Boyd Olen Young

                                         1924-2021

Our dad, Boyd Young passed away at home from natural causes, four days shy of his 97th birthday, on Sunday November 28, 2021.

He was born December 2, 1924 to Luther and Pearl Young in Star Idaho where he grew up with his family. He was the youngest of Luther and Pearl’s three children, with his older siblings, his sister Luella and his brother Roy. His family came from a long tradition of self-sufficient and hard-working farmers. Growing up, Boyd learned to do everything required to maintain the farm and home from carpentry, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, caring for the livestock and more. The family saying was “can’t never did anything.” Enduring the great depression, his family was always grateful for FDR’s New Deal which helped so many farm families survive hard times. It was a time when people pulled together for the common good.

He graduated from Star High School where he was captain of the football team his senior year. After school, he worked farming, hauling milk for the local creameries, and spent some time logging in Northern Idaho.

He met Mary Alice Lee (Mangan) in Boise when he was 27 and they were married on February 2nd, Groundhog’s Day, in 1952. Boyd and Mary lived on a farm north of Middleton Idaho for a few years with their young children, Mike and Vicki, before moving to the North end of Boise in 1960. Always busy doing something, he found time for recreating, camping and fishing in the mountains, which instilled a life time love of the Idaho outdoors in the whole family.

Boyd was a restless and ambitious guy and soon tired of “working for wages” which motivated him to go into business for himself. He successfully owned and operated Boyd’s Texaco and then later Wholesale Brake Supply until he retired in the early 1980s.

After retirement Boyd and Mary bought a 5th wheel trailer and they found their “heaven on earth” place on Vancouver Island, B.C. at Campbell River, where they returned every June to fish. They stayed on the move for years, spending the winters after Christmas in Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother and sister. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mary; his two children: Mike Young (Cindy Trail) and Vicki Greenfield (Johnny); grandchildren: Shauna Stewart (Joe) and Leigh Anna Greenfield; and great grandchildren: Alexa, Brooklynn and Ryder Stewart.
