Obituary of Josephine Egbert

Jo Egbert obituary

Phoebe Josephine “Jo” Egbert passed away April 28, 2023 at The Bridge at Valley View, in Boise, ID. She was born November 5, 1927 in Boise, ID, the second child of Walter C. and Phoebe D. Jones.  She grew up in Meridian, ID, and graduated from Meridian High School.

After a year at Boise Junior College, she married her high school sweetheart, Hugh Egbert on November 23, 1946.   After living briefly in McCall, ID, they settled in the Boise area. Jo and Hugh had six children, so she was always on the go!  She grew her own vegetables, sewed clothes for her family, and led our Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies, and Girl Scouts. After becoming involved with Daughters of The Nile, she led Job’s Daughters and helped with DeMolay chapters.  As her children moved on, she volunteered at Whittier Elementary as a teacher’s aide

One of Jo’s greatest passions was singing. She would cheerfully break into songs because a comment might remind her of a piece of music, or just because doing dishes was boring!  Music was a constant as we grew up, whether it was radio, TV, or a record. Watching Jo and Hugh dance in the living room to the big band programs was the definition of romance.

She loved singing in the Daughters of the Nile choir, and treasured her friendships with the “ladies of the choir”. After serving a term as Queen of Iras Temple, she happily returned to her beloved choir.

After Hugh’s retirement from Idaho Power, they enjoyed traveling with friends, until Hugh’s death in 2014.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Phoebe Jones; brother, Robert Jones; and husband, Hugh.

Jo is survived by her children: Carl Egbert (Janette), Laura (Vic) Otto, Karen (Steve) Redmond, Hugh (Kate) Egbert Jr., Mike (Sharon) Egbert, and Penny (Dan) Blanchard; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren

Our deepest thanks to the caregivers at the Bridge at Valley View, who felt like more family and the staff of Keystone Hospice who cared for her with kindness and dignity
